The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic has become the first men’s cycling race in Britain to achieve elite-level status after it was added to the WorldTour programme by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
Sunday’s race through Surrey and the capital was won by Belgian Tom Boonen in a bunch sprint finish.
Richard Walsh, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Localities and Community Wellbeing, said: “This is fantastic news for a race that fans in Surrey, London and way beyond have already really got behind. It further cements the county’s reputation as a world-class place to ride and I have no doubt it will help to inspire even more people to get cycling.”
More information about the Classic joining the top-flight of international races can be found on the RideLondon website.
