Fly-tipping drops despite introduction of waste charging

New figures from Surrey County Council reveal fly-tipping dealt with in September plummeted compared to the same month last year despite the introduction of charging for some construction waste.

Mike Goodman, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Planning, said: “We always said we believed fears of a big increase in fly-tipping were misplaced and that’s borne out by these figures which show that in the first month of our new scheme the amount of fly-tipped waste collected by district and borough councils was almost half what it was last September. Five hundred tonnes were dealt with in September 2015 compared with 283 tonnes last month – a significant drop of more than 200 tonnes.”
