Mark Cavendish to race in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic

British cycling star Mark Cavendish has confirmed he will race in Sunday’s Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic.

Sprinter Cavendish was eliminated from this year’s Tour de France last week when he was unable to finish a tough mountain stage within the time limit.

The 33-year-old, who has won 30 stages of the Tour, said: “I’m delighted to be able to get back racing so quickly and I’m really looking forward to racing the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic again.

“I’ve not raced in the event since it was awarded UCI WorldTour status but I was there watching last year and it has grown into a fantastic race. In the last two years the race has come down to a sprint on The Mall and if it does so again this year I’m sure it will be a spectacular sprint finish.”

The race was awarded WorldTour status for the first time last year when it was won by Alexander Kristoff.
