County council backs community bid to welcome Syrian refugee family to Mole Valley

Surrey County Council is supporting an application from a community group to sponsor a family fleeing conflict in Syria to settle in Mole Valley.

Mary Lewis, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, took the decision on 22 January. More details are available here.

Mrs Lewis said: “I’m pleased to support this community bid to help a Syrian refugee family in desperate need to rebuild their lives here in Surrey.

“The community group behind the application has really done their homework and, as long as they get the government’s final go-ahead, we’ll work with them and our partners at Mole Valley District Council to make sure the family has everything they need.

“It’s all part of the government’s Community Sponsorship Scheme for getting citizens involved in supporting refugees. This is on top of work we’ve been part of since 2015 alongside all of Surrey’s district and borough councils to resettle vulnerable families fleeing Syria and surrounding areas.”

The group behind the sponsorship bid is Ashtead Churches Community Trust – click here for more information.
