Improving fire and rescue service culture

London Fire Brigade’s Independent Culture Review, chaired by Nazir Afzal OBE, has been published which has found a ‘culture of racism and misogyny’ in the Brigade. We would like to thank all those who took part in it for their honesty and courage in sharing their experiences.

As a service we acknowledge the report and its recommendations. The report and experiences within it are extremely upsetting, and disappointing for us as an industry. There is no place for discrimination, harassment or bullying in Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

We will be taking the opportunity to study the report and its recommendations carefully to help with our own culture improvement, of which we are being supported by 31Ten Consulting, and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) journey. This includes an EDI assessment by the Asian Fire Service Association (AFSA) in June 2022.

Our recent staff survey saw an improved culture within our service; however, we are aware that more work is to be done and all of our efforts are going into focusing on this as a priority.
